Transport

Transport is a key factor in the European economy and there is an increasing demand for efficient transport system within Europe, especially after the accession of the ten new Member States. The aim for an European transport policy is not only to build new infrastructure and open up markets, it must ensure a transport system that is sustainable from an economic, social and environmental point of view. The transport policy is funded under the budget heading Competitiveness for growth and employment

The objectives of EU transport policy is to help to provide Europeans with efficient, effective transport systems that:

• Offer a high level of mobility to people and business throughout Europe
• Protect the environment, ensure energy security, promote minimum labour standards for the sector and protect the passenger and the citizen
• Encourage innovation and support the first two aims of mobility and protection by increasing the efficiency and sustainablility of the growing transport sectorin support of the first two aims of mobility and protection by increasing the efficiency and sustainability of the growing transport sector
• Connect internationally by promoting the Union's policies that reinforce sustainable mobility, protection and innovation by participating in the international organisations.

TRANS-EUROPEAN TRANSPORT NETWORKS:

The trans-European Transport Network is a key element in the relaunched Lisbon Strategy for competitiveness and employment in Europe.

Several programmes exist that help the EU improve the transport sector. GALILEO is one of the 30 TEN-T priority projects and is a European initiative to create a global satellite navigation system offering precise positioning and timing services for commercial and personal users anywhere in the world, using small and inexpensive receivers. STEER is a programme for transport within the Intelligent Energy for Europe (IEE) and Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP). Marco Polo II , the successor of Marco Polo I, addresses the problem of constraining international road freight transport through effective short-term interventions (mainly 3-4 year project support initiatives that produce lasting effects) by implementing practical logistics services projects. Transport projects can be financed by FP7 under the sub-programme COOPERATION / TRANSPORT.

As a part of the Seventh Framework Programme, Trans-European Transport Networks are based on technological and operational advances and on European transport policy. They work to develop integrated, safer, “greener” and “smarter” pan-European transport systems for the benefit of all citizens and society, and help the European Transport industry become more competitive in the global market.
