Research policy

The policy for Research and Innovation is of crucial importance in meeting the objectives set out by the Lisbon strategy. The knowledge triangle, research, innovation and education, is identified as the tool for the EU to become a true knowledge economy.

High quality research is complex, costly and risky. The coordination of R&D investment at an European level gives benefits in the form of economies of scale and helps to avoid duplication costs.

Research at a Community level is financed under the 7 th Framework programme of the Community for research, technological development and demonstrations activities (FP7). FP7 is strongly focusing on promoting and investing in world-class research. FP7 consists of subprogrammes: Cooperation, Ideas, People, Capacities and Non-nuclear actions of the Joint Research Centre.

Community support for Innovation will be financed by the new Competitiveness and Innovation programme (CIP). The main aim of this programme is to boost the competitiveness and productivity of European business (particularly SMEs) while at the same time propose support for eco-innovation and sustainable energy.
