EnvironmentThe environmental policy of the EU is based on precautionary principle and preventive actions. Six Community Environment Action Programmes have been adopted and over 700 pieces of environmental legislation enacted since the inception of the EU. The EU environmental policy is placed within the context of the Lisbon Strategy, which was supplemented by a third, environmental pillar following the adoption of the EU Sustainable Development Strategy at the Gothenburg European Council in 2001. The EU Sustainable Development Strategy outlines detailed objectives and actions to pursue economic growth, social improvements and environmental protection. LIFE+ - EU's financial instrument for the environment – will be the main funding opportunity contributing to the implementation, updating and development of Community environmental policy and legislation, including integrating the environment into other policies, which in effect will also contribute to sustainable development. Life+ will support the implementation of the Sixth Environment Action Programme, a programme developed to combat climate change, halt the decline in biodiversity, improve the quality of life and ensure the sustainable use and management of natural resources.
