Culture

The cultural policy covers many areas including audiovisual, media, dance, education and training in the arts, books, music, cultural heritage and theatre.

The cultural dimension shall be taken into account in all activities according to the Treaty establishing the European Community, Article 155. Special attention will be paid to the respect and promotion of the diversity of cultures.

Cultural actions are mainly financed under the programme Culture 2007, during the period 2007-2013.

The main objective of this programme is to enhance a common cultural area in Europe, through the development of cultural cooperation among the creators, cultural players and cultural institutions. It also aims to encourage creativity and mobility among artists, provide access to culture for as many people as possible, disseminate art and culture, and promote intercultural dialogue and knowledge of the history of European people.

To help promote the importance of culture the EU has appointed one or more European “Capitals of Culture each year, which may receive financial support.
