Consumer policy

The Consumer policy contributes to the achievement of the EU's objective to improve the quality of life for EU citizens. The Consumer Policy has been created to ensure an open, fair and transparent internal market, allowing consumers to take advantage of the full internal market potential.

Increasing consumer confidence in the internal market contributes to the improvement of businesses' competitiveness by establishing a regulatory framework that is uniform across the varying EU markets, is equally enforced and effectively protects consumers.

The primary goals of the Consumer Policy are:

• Strengthening the consumers' position in the market place by developing consumer education tools and actively supporting of EU consumer Organisations and their involvement in policy making;
• Ensuring that consumer concerns are taken into account in all EU policies;
• Complementing Member States' consumer policy;
• Collecting consumer-related data to support the development of legislative proposals and other initiatives.
