Audiovisual and Media

The protection of the diversity of European cultures is an important issue and the audiovisual sector plays an important role in building a European cultural identity. Community support for the competitiveness of the audiovisual sector is contributing to the achievement of the objectives set by the Lisbon strategy.

Furthermore, support for this sector is considered important for other European policies, as audiovisual works are essential for the transmission of knowledge in the field of education, science, environment, research and governance. Support for the audiovisual sector will also help promote and disseminate European cultural values across the globe .

During the period 2007-2013, the audiovisual sector will be supported by the Framework programme Media 2007. It is built on the experiences of the MEDIA Plus and MEDIA Training Programmes. MEDIA 2007 will intervene in the pre-production and post-production phases.

In the pre-production phase, support is applied to the acquisition and improvement of skills and development in the audiovisual sector. Specific objectives are to improve the creative and management skills of European audiovisual professionals and adopt their technical skills to digital technologies.

Financial assistance is available for the development phase of production from independent SMEs in the documentary, animation and drama genres as well as in multimedia. Within the post- production phase, community actions are concentrated on transnational distribution support and promotion.
