Eurimages is a fund set up by the Council of Europe to support the European film industry by encouraging Member States to cooperate in the production and distribution of films. The objective of the programme is both economic and cultural , providing financial assistance to film makers so they can focus on the art of film that explores and promotes the European culture.

The Fund allocates finances to assist in the production, distribution and viewing of films, which is decided by the Board of Management made up of a representative from each Member State.

Eurimages was established in 1988 and currently has 32 Member States , including Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina , Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic , Denmark, Estonia , Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Macedonia , the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey.

The Fund provides grants in three areas:

1. Co-production- In order to be eligible, at least two co-producers must be from different Member States and most ( 90%) of the budget is used for this area
2. Distribution - The support is this area is given to distributors from those Member States not eligible from support from the Media Programme of the European Union, which include Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Macedonia and Turkey. Distributors from any member State may also receive distribution funds for films emanating from the six Member States listed above but no distributor may apply for a film created in their own State.
3. Cinemas - This funding area is run by EUROPA CINEMAS and is open to cinemas in Member States not eligible for assistance from the Media Programme of the European Union. It aims to increase the access and showing of European films and build cooperation among cinema exhibitors, distributors and European organisations.

The Fund receives its resources shall from three areas:

  • Annual contributions from Member States, with the amount being decided each year by the Member States representative on the Board of Management
  • Repaid loans
  • Donations or other payments
