Period: 2007 - 2013
Budget: EUR 727 million
The Intelligent Energy- Europe Programme (IEE) is one of three subprogrammes within the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP), the other two being the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme and ICT Policy Support Programme.
IEE aims to contribute to the achievement of the 3 general objectives of the EU energy strategy:
Improving the energy diversification and supply security in the Union |
Enhancing the competitiveness of companies
Protecting the environment.
The Programme will encourage the wider uptake of new and renewable energies and improve energy efficiency, and shall foster compliance with the energy regulatory framework. It includes actions to:
Increase the uptake and demand for energy efficiency
Promote renewable energy sources and energy diversification
Stimulate the diversification of fuels and energy efficiency in transport
The programme also targets to help boost up the level of investments in new and best performing technologies and facilitate the reduction of gaps between the successful demonstration of innovative technologies and their effective introduction to the market to reach mass deployment. In addition it will improve the administrative capacity in the Member States to develop strategies and policies and to implement existing regulations.
The sub-programmes of IEE are;
- Energy efficiency and rational use of resources (SAVE): focuses on the improvement of energy efficiency and the rational utilization of energy, especially in the industry and building sectors.
- New and renewable resources (ALTENER): emphasizes the importance of the alternative new and renewable energy resources for centralized and decentralized production of electricity, heat and cooling in the interest of a diversified energy utilization. There's need for taking effort to integrate these alternative energies into the local environment and the energy systems.
- Energy in transport (STEER): special attention is paid to the support of initiatives regarding to all energy aspects can occur in connection with transport, the diversification of fuels and promotion of renewable fuels and energy efficiency in the area of transport. Actions probably also integrate several of these specific fields.
- COOPENER projects, which focus on sustainable energy services to overcome poverty in developing countries, will be continued in the frame of the new external assistance instruments of the EU.
